Was doing some sorting yesterday, that is until I found my old vcds haha. Pretty Woman... The Bodyguard... Gone with the Wind... Four Weddings and A funeral...and When Harry met Sally! So I sat down on the couch and watched When Harry met Sally. Why this one of all the others? Hmmm I dont know, guess I just felt like it. The show was humourous, loved the plot esp. the dialogues. I thought that the most interesting part of the show other than the well-known quotes, was the transitional interviews with the old-and-happily-married couples. Those were really nice and really added a comical effect when harry and sally did the last one.
Well, only one well-known quote of all time in the whole movie I think.
Harry Burns: You realize of course that we could never be friends.
Sally Albright: Why not?
Harry Burns: What I'm saying is - and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form - is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.
Sally Albright: That's not true. I have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.
Harry Burns: No you don't.
Sally Albright: Yes I do.
Harry Burns: No you don't.
Sally Albright: Yes I do.
Harry Burns: You only think you do.
Sally Albright: You say I'm having sex with these men without my knowledge?
Harry Burns: No, what I'm saying is they all WANT to have sex with you.
Sally Albright: They do not.
Harry Burns: Do too.
Sally Albright: They do not.
Harry Burns: Do too.
Sally Albright: How do you know?
Harry Burns: Because no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive. He always wants to have sex with her.
Sally Albright: So, you're saying that a man can be friends with a woman he finds unattractive?
Harry Burns: No. You pretty much want to nail 'em too.
Sally Albright: What if THEY don't want to have sex with YOU?
Harry Burns: Doesn't matter because the sex thing is already out there so the friendship is ultimately doomed and that is the end of the story.
Sally Albright: Well, I guess we're not going to be friends then.
Harry Burns: I guess not.
Sally Albright: That's too bad. You were the only person I knew in New York.
Shall I take a big risk and embark on attempting the impossible - finding the answer to the issue raised donkey years ago on whether men and women can be friends?
Well I don't see why not. I think the movie, despite its high entertainment value, is a little extreme in its views. Being Hollywood, they never fail to play up the issue of sex in romance and therefore it is not surprising why the movie takes the view it takes. Especially the part about how any form of interaction between a man and a woman is always about sex. Well, I wouldn't know about the guys, but I think we women as a whole are more sophisticated than that. This I believe, most of my sisters would agree with :)
Not to say that I totally disagree with the whole theory brought up by the movie. I think the part about "the sex thing being out there" can be true (note: I said "can be true"- it's not always true. As a rule of thumb I think there's only black and white - either attracted or not attracted, no grays.) , but it doesn't mean that the friendship is "doomed" anyway. If you ask me, I think it's all about balance and knowing what one exactly wants - so it's either friendship, or relationship or friendship + relationship. Yeah I know everyone's like "of course I'd pick the third one" but hey what are the chances of that happening? Get real, my dear friends.
Perhaps I'm cynical, but friendship seems the best way out ;)
Bleah, spouting nonsense again.
