Here's a must watch movie - 50 First Dates! It's so sweeet!!
Okay, ahem, calm down. Well it's not the Pretty Woman sort of fairytale romance, I think it's an account of a really determined effort to stay together. I felt that there was a balance of humour (which gets on the crude side at times but it's nonetheless funny) and drama, so throughout the show, you're like half-laughing and half-tearing.
I guess then that we do take certain things for granted, such as our memories - the ability to remember when happened the day before, the ability to remember who our loved ones are and the freedom to live our lives along with the days that pass. Perhaps that's what makes the movie rather heart-warming, to see how Lucy(Drew Barrymore) has to relive the same day of her life over and over again and how the people around attempt to create that facade which she lives in just to protect her from the harsh reality. Particularly touching was what Henry tried to do to get Lucy to remember him, but I guess I shouldn't spoil the show ;p
The audience laughed everytime Lucy repeated how wonderful their first kiss was and I felt that perhaps the producers intended the effect of black humor there. I mean it's supposed to be tragic because she, due to her condition, cannot remember that it's like their 21st "first" kiss. But we laugh because it seems ridiculous to us that she doesn't remember. And the sad thing is, her condition, which is inflicted upon her not by her own will, becomes humour for us because we're so used to the idea that we must remember such incidents.
Well, on the whole, at least, the plot is kind to Lucy. She may not have her memory, but she has Henry and that's enough for her to live a fruitful existence.
(Perhaps some may differ from me and say she could have done greater things with her life if she had her memory, but hey, sometimes you just can't have everything, so be thankful with what you're given yeah.)
Besides, who wants a memory anyway to remember the unhappiness of life in the real world. For her, everyday is a new experience and I think that's wonderful in its own way.
