I know, I know, that just sounds so suggestive haha. But it's true ,is it not?
Anyway, just wanted to write about Mona Lisa Smile. It was a really inspiring experience for me. In fact, I would say it actually gave birth to my blog baby here :)
There's nothing extraordinary about the plot, but the message it brings out is meaningful. Julia Roberts tells her student to go ahead and do what she really wants to do.
(The drawback is that her student eventually decides to give up Yale law school, (yeah I do mean Yale!!) to get married and have kids. But that's because the plot was set in the 1950s I think. )
The message is still carried across I feel, as her student eventually does select her own path, though it may not be the brightest thing to do....(alright, I confess, I'm a feminist at heart. ha. Liberation for Women!)
Mona Lisa smile is a mini-tour through the learning journey of a group of girls who have been made to think that their sole purpose in life is to become the perfect consort of their men(imagine my face when I was watching them do marriage classes.. yes, it's the beady eye look throughout.). But it is more than a protrayal of the feminist movement or the progression of the female status quo in American society. It is a call for all those who are compelled to make decisions, be it difficult or painful ones. It is a film that calls out to the audience to be themselves, to dare to follow their hearts.
For those who need some inspiration, go catch that movie.
Oh, and before I forget, it may also work as a brillant wake-up call for all guys out there who think that their women live for them. It's time to wake up guys! We ain't no longer in the 50s. ha.
